Sajda e TazeemiCategory: QuestionsSajda e Tazeemi

Salam,
I wanted to ask that What do you say about doing Sajda e tazeemi to Imams and Alhybait? By sajda i don’t mean how we do to Allah i mean out of respect. I read a hadith in which 50 slaves did sajda e tazeemi to Imam Ali Naqi (as) and were killed by a person who saw them doing that act and later when that person went to Imam Ali Naqi’s (as) House and Imam asked him about those 50 slaves and he told Imam that they were killed and Imam asks him  “All of them” and he replies “yes” then Imam asked him “would you like to see them” and he says yes  and then the Imam tells him to enter a room and when he does he sees those slaves alive sitting and eating fruits.
Here is the hadith reference: As Saqib Fil Manaqib Pg:529
Also Imam Baqir (a.s) narrates that,
“The Holy Prophet (saww) had 3 things which none other than him had. There was no shadow of the Prophet (saww). From where ever the Prophet (saww) used to pass such a smell use to come for 3 days that people came to know that the Prophet (saww) had passed from here. And which ever stone and tree the Prophet (saww) passed by they fell in his prostration (out of respect).”

As Salaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh,

Based on your specific question and information provided.

This issue of prostration outside of the Obligatory prostrations in Salat and for the Qur’an verses, is complex, due to different understanding among the believers. Not to question, just For Example and to illustrate the complexity – The Hadith you mentioned, the gesture – was it a bow or actual prostration, (if prostration what was the intention?), Similarly, the prostration of a tree is different – was it a simple bending or a bow which is termed as prostration. The prostration of Adam(as) as the Qibla and the prostration to Prophet Yusuf (as) mentioned in the Quran, what is the reality and understanding of different scholars. I will link a discussion of Sayyid AL-Khoei (*). Or why Iblis, did not answer to Allah(awj) that the prostration you ordered is only for you.  These are complex questions and different scholars have their own understanding or views. (No Taqlid, allowed).

However, in terms of Islamic Acts. It is Mustahab (recommended) to offer Prostration of Thanks to Allah(awj) for any blessing any time and place. In the acts of worship, it is a Shari issue, however, its roots are in the Aqidah and intention. People who testify to the oneness’ of Allah(awj), Prophethood of Muhammad al-Mustafa (peace be upon him and his pure progeny) and the Commander of the Faithful Imam Ali (Peace be on him) is the vicegerent of Allah (awj)), their intention for all acts are reflective of this testimony. All our acts are based on our Aqidah and intention.

What you read in the hadith books or books of scholars can be interpreted differently by different scholars and there is no Taqlid in Aqidah ( Usul al-Din). In terms of taking any Hadith in extracting Shari’ rulings for the acts of worship, the scrutiny and investigations, the criteria are very stringent. Unless the hadith has the highest level of clarity and certainty, the Jurists (Scholars who specialize in Jurisprudence) may differ, and some may use it based on other hadith or secondary evidence or Aqidah.

We can only provide you with a ruling from the Jurisprudence aspect. Here the ruling of the fallible Jurist (Mujtahid / Marji) is a best effort as briefly outlined above, in understanding what could be Allah(awj) law on issues which are disputable in terms of Islamic Acts. (Furu- al-Din).

From the Jurisprudence Perspective:

It is forbidden to prostrate to anyone other than Allah, without distinction between the infallibles (peace be upon them) and others, and what some Shiites do in the scenes (shrines) (مشاهد الأئمّة) of the Imams (peace be upon them) must be thanks to Allah Almighty for their success in visiting them (peace be upon them) and being present in their scenes ( shrines) (مشاهدهم), Allah Almighty has brought us together with them in this world and the Hereafter, He is the most merciful of the merciful.
