Khatam for the deadKhatam for the dead

I’m a pakistani shia . There is a practice where every Thursday we cook good food and have fruit and sweets and then we pray over them reading surahs from the quran and making duas. The belief is that on Thursday allah s.w.t. allows the souls of the dead to come to earth and they benefit from the food as in they can taste it and such. I want to know if this is islamic or is there any Islamic basis for this. Also there is written in some translated urdu hadith books that the other souls make fun of the souls who’s families dont do khatam .Your reply is greatly appreciated

Assalamu Alaikum,
Souls don’t taste food. Quar’an Recitation and giving Charity to poor people give them rewards and Alah Knows.
