Assalamu Alaikum,

My wife and I have been unsuccessful in our attempts to conceive for many years. Therefore, we have decided to pursue IVF treatment. One step of the process involves producing semen on-site through masturbation within a specific timeslot, usually lasting 15-20 minutes. Considering the prohibition of masturbation, I discussed our situation and chose to freeze the sperm instead. I booked a hotel room near the laboratory twice to collect the sample using a condom.

Unfortunately, I was unable to provide the sample due to anxiety. Another factor may be that the laboratory does not allow flexibility in the timeslot, requiring sexual intercourse to take place within the designated time slot of 15-20 minutes. After multiple failed attempts and incurring additional expenses for hotel bookings, travelling and sperm storage, I resorted to producing the sample through masturbation. Please note that I had to book a hotel room near the laboratory as there is a requirement to drop a semen sample to the laboratory within one hour as it becomes useless after that time. Now I have the following two questions / queries.

Q1. Considering the circumstance of “difficulty and necessity”, I am wondering if producing sperm through masturbation is acceptable?

Q2. Would a child conceived using sperm obtained through masturbation be considered legitimate?

As Salaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh,
We hope this answer finds you in high Islamic spirit.
1- It is not allowed to masturbate unless it is necessary and the necessity can’t be determined by anybody except you and your wife. If your wife makes you ejaculate then it is allowed.
2- Yes.
May Allah help you!
