WILADAH OF SAYYIDAH ZAINAB AL-KUBRAA (A.S)
on 5th of Jamadiul Ulaa 6 AH, Hadhrat
Zainab Al-Kubraa AS was born in Madinah to Imam
Ali ibni Abi Talib AS and Seyyidah Fatimatu
Zzahraa AS in the lifetime of The Prophet SAWW.
This was a time of great joy for the Family of The
Prophet SAWW as she was the first illustrious
daughter to be born after two Infallible sons,
Imam Al-Hassan Al-Mujtaba (Shabbar) and Imam
Al-Hussein AS (Shubbar/Shabbir). Neither Seyyidah
Fatimah AS nor Imam Ali AS would name her, but
waited for The Prophet SAWW who was away to return
and give the baby her name. The Prophet SAWW named
her Zainab upon revelation from ALLAH SWT. Hence,
her name, as that of Hadhrat Isa AS and Hadhrat
Yahya AS was chosen by ALLAH SWT Himself. Zainab
is Zainul Ab (The Adornment of her father).
Indeed, not only was she an adornment of Imam Ali
AS, but also resembled him in her valor, speech
and ability to overcome the enemy’s empty
rhetoric. She carried the message of Karbala in
the bazaars of Kufa and Shaam and in the courts of
the tyrants Ibn Ziyaad and Yazid ibn Mu’awiyah and
triggered a revolution that eventually toppled the
Umayyads. She fearlessly belied the usurper
accursed governor of Kufa, Ibn Marjanah, and the
usurper accursed Caliph Yazid ibni Mu’awiyah in
their own courts while she was in shackles and
aroused the conscience of the Kufans and the
Syrians who had been beguiled by the Umayyads to
vilify Banu Hashim and perpetrate the massacre of Karbala. She was hailed as the scholar untaught by
anyone by no less than an Infallible Imam AS. We
shall salute her at the Wiladah celebration on
Thursday, Apr. 30, 2009 at our Center.
SHAHADAH OF SEYYIDATI NISAAIL ALAMIIN (A.S)
On 13th Jamadiul Ulaa, 11 AH (according
to some riwayah), barely three months after The
demise of The Prophet SAWW (on 28th Safar, 11 AH),
the only daughter of The Prophet SAWW, Hadhrat
Fatimatu Zzahraa AS, succumbed to the fatal
injuries caused by the burning door that fell upon
her when Umar al-Khattab set fire to her house.
When Abu Bakr falsely assumed the mantle of The
Prophet SAWW and became the First caliph after The
Prophet SAWW by the dubious process of ‘election’
at Saqifa banu Sai’da, a square where rogues and
bandits met, he wanted to force Imam Ali AS, the
rightfully appointed Caliph by The Prophet SAWW
acting upon Divine Orders, to pledge allegiance to
his caliphate. Imam Ali AS would not come out of
the house to do so. So, Abu Bakr sent his cohort
Umar Al-Khattab with a cavalry to attack the House
where Imam Ali AS and Seyyidah Fatima AS lived
with their children. When someone told Umar that
Fatimatu Zzahraa AS, the daughter of the Prophet
SAWW lived there; he asked “fa in”? (So, what?)
and proceeded to set fire to the door. Behind the
door stood Seyyidah Fatimah AS pleading in vain
and the burning door fell upon her, crushing her
between the door and the wall and causing fatal
injuries to her and killing her unborn baby,
Muhsin. Two murders were committed by this hate
crime for which the perpetrators will undoubtedly
pay heavily when they stand up on the Day of
Judgment before The All-Just. It was these fatal
injuries that caused Fatima AS’ martyrdom, a
simple plain murder. The majlis commemorating
this date of Shahdaha will be held on Thursday,
May 12, 2009 after Ziyarah.
WILADAH OF IMAM ZAINUL ABIDIIN (A.S)
On 14th Jamadiul Ulaa, 38 AH (according
to some riwayah) Imam Zainul Abidiin AS was born
in Madinah to Imam Hussein ibni Ali AS and
Seyyidah Shehrbanu AS. His parents were the
noblest of Arab (Banu Hashim) and of Ajam
(non-Arab, Persian) and the Imam AS is known as
“ ibnul khiyratayn” The Imam AS was of
delicate disposition and Imam Ali ibni Talib AS
gave special instructions to ensure that this Imam
AS was treated with extra care and comfort. Yet,
the Umayyads put him through excruciating physical
and mental pain in Karbala that the Imam AS
endured with patience unparalleled. Imam Ali ibnil
Hussein AS was bestowed the epithet of Zainul
Abidiin AS by The Prophet SAWW who described how
on the Day of Judgment ALLAH SWT will announce:
Where is Zainul Abidiin? Our Fourth Imam AS will
advance through the throngs of humanity to take up
his position. The Imam AS also known as Sayyidu
Ssajidiin (the leader of those who prostrate in
front of ALLAH SWT)
THE BATTLE OF JAMAL
On 15th Jamadiul Ulaa, 36 AH, the Battle of
Jamal (Camel) took place in Basra and Imam Ali AS
routed the forces of Ayesha bint Abu Bakr and her
cronies Talha and Zubeir. It is called the Battle
of Jamal because Ayesha binti Abu Bakr who
harbored intense hatred for Imam Ali AS rode upon
a camel to fight Imam Ali AS in Basra. Ayesha had
instigated the murder of Uthman bin Affan whom she
used to refer to as N’athal. Yet, when she heard
that Imam Ali AS had become the Caiph of the
Muslims by popular choice, she took up the cause
of avenging Uthman’s assassination that was
engineered by Mu’awiyah but blamed upon Imam Ali
AS who actually sent help to besieged Uthman.
Ayesha was warned by the Prophet SAWW not to be
the one at whom the dogs of Hawab would bark,
which they did. She was alarmed and wanted to go
back but her cronies assured her that the barking
dogs were not at Hawab and she believed them
against the warnings of The Prophet SAWW. Umm
Salamah AS, whom The Prophet SAWW had cautioned
Ayesha not to disregard The Prophet SAWW’s advice
and other wives also refused to join Ayesha. Her
army was routed by Imam Ali AS’ army and her main
supporters Talha and Zubeir were killed. She was
sent back to Madinah in dignity escorted by her
honorable brother, Muhammad ibni Abi Bakr whom
Imam Ali AS called his son as Muhammad ibni Abi
Bakr had recognized the truth of the Imamah of
Imam Ali AS. Imam AS’ magnanimity to his opponents
in victory in Basra in 36 AH was as exemplary as
The Prophet SAWW’s in 8 AH. When The Prophet SAWW
triumphantly entered Makkah which surrendered
without bloodshed, he forgave those who had
harassed, plotted to kill him and caused him to
migrate from his beloved birth-place Makkah. In
the hour of triumph, The Prophet SAWW did not
force anyone to accept Islam and declared amnesty
for Abu Sufyan, the greatest living enemy of Islam
and The Prophet SAWW at that time. When Abu Sufyan
willy-nilly accepted Islam, he still harbored
enmity against The Prophet SAWW and passed on this
poison to his son Mu’awiyah who in turn passed on
to his son Yazid ibni Mu’awiyah. All these three
were leopards in the guise of sheep and have
wrought untold harm upon Islam, along with the
hypocrites of yore and indeed of today too.
Mua’wiyah’s hadith manufacturing is well-known and
so are his innovations and Yazid, of course, took
the cake. He massacred Imam Hussein AS and his
family and companions at Karbala in 61 AH,
ransacked, raped and decimated Madinah, The City
of The Prophet SAWW in 62 AH and sacked the sacred
BaituLLAHIl Haraam in Makkah in 63 AH. Can
such people be called Muslims, let alone caliphs
of the Muslims and RadhiyaLLAHu anhum? Let
the ummah judge its faith and see where lies the
Truth that Prophet Muhammad SAWW taught. Any
discerning eye cannot but see that the Truth is
with Ali AS. All books of ahadith quote The
Prophet SAWW’s hadith: “The Truth is with Ali and
Ali is with the Truth”. To accept any other Caliph
but Imam Ali AS is to refuse to accept The Prophet
SAWW’s teachings.
20th Jamadiul Ulaa will see the beginning
of continuous rain for forty days until 1st
Rajabul Murajjab after the reappearance of Imam
Al-Hujjah AFS.

Q: Can a learned woman lead congregational
salaat for men and women?
A: A woman can lead congregational salaat of
women only. If the congregation is of men or of
mixed men and women the Imam must be a man.
Q: What is the authenticity of the hadith
that The Prophet SAWW allowed women to lead
congregational salaat that included men?
A: We are not aware of any such authentic
hadith in Ja’fari Fiqh.
Q: Is one entitled to object to the holding of
Friday prayer by claiming that the maraj'i of the
Muslims in Najaf and Qum do not establish it,
while knowing that in the city in which the
mukallaf resides, most of the residents perform
Friday prayer on the basis of their fiqh?
A: One is not entitled to do that. As for
non-holding of Friday (prayer) by the maraji'i,
who are of the opinion that it (Friday prayer) is
superior to dhuhr (prayer) and the former
replacing it (dhuhr), may be due to personal
excuses or the like. This does not prevent others
from establishing it (Friday prayer). God knows
best.
Q: There are two mosques in one city and
Friday prayer is held in both of them? Given that
they are very close to each other, is the prayer
valid?
A: If the distance between the two mosques is
one Farsakh (5/5km approximately) or more, the
prayers are in order.
Q: I want to ask about talking to ones fiancée
on telephone, is it permissible or not?
A: If there is no such a fear that you might
fall into a sin, there would be no problem.
Q: Is it permissible to chat with girls on
the internet?
A: If there is a fear that a girl or a boy may
be drawn towards sin, it is not permissible.
Normally chatting ends up in a sin for both sides.
Q: Is it permissible for a boy of fifteen
years to have a girl friend?
A: Friendship with a non-mahram is not allowed.
Q: Is it correct to say that the music that
arouses sexual, lustful urges and promotes
unstable and degrading behavior is the forbidden
one?
And is it correct to say that the music that
soothes the nerves or causes relaxation, the music
that forms the background of a scene in a movie to
increase the effect of the scene on the viewers,
the music that is used for physical exercise
during workouts, the music that dramatizes a
particular scene by its tune, or the one that
arouses the zeal [in soldiers] is the permissible
one?
A: Forbidden music is the music that is suitable
for entertainment and amusement gatherings, even
if it does not arouse sexual temptations.
Permissible music is the music that is not
suitable for such gatherings, even if it does not
soothe the nerves like the martial music and that
played at funerals.

THE LIFE AND TIMES OF
IMAM ZAINUL ABIDIIN (A.S)
15th Jamadi’ul Awwal is considered one of the
dates of the wiladah of our Fourth Imam, Hadhrat
Imam Ali ibnil Hussein ibni Abi Talib AS. His
epithets include Zainul Abidiin, Sayyidu Ssajidiin
and Ibnul Khiyaratyn. His mother, Seyyidah
Shehrbanu AS is said to have passed away early in
his life and he was brought up by his step-mothers
and aunts.
Imam Al-Sajjad AS’ “Risalatul Huquq”
(Charter of Rights) is an unparalleled treatise on
human rights that if followed diligently would
lead humanity on the path of justice and equity
and therefore happiness and contentment. On the
rights of the needy, for example, Islam
recognizes that there is wealth and poverty and
absolute equality on this score is simply not
feasible. Communism’s efforts at eradicating
poverty through “equality” fell flat on its face
and capitalism widens the gap between the rich and
the poor. Islam, on the other hand, recognizes
reality and advocates reducing the gap between the
haves and have-nots and this is the spiritual
dimension that lacks in other systems. There are
ahadith of The Prophet SAWW and the Ahlul Bayt AS
that exhort people to be charitable, pay the
religious dues and look after needy neighbors and
relatives to reduce this gap. There are ahadith
emphasizing “zuhd” which is the highest form of
spirituality for a zahid does not care if he eats
or not but wants to ensure that some other person
does not go hungry if he can help it.
Abudharr Al-Ghiffari, a prominent sahabi
(companion) of The Prophet SAWW and Imam Ali AS
was such a zahid who used to speak publicly about
the wastrel Mu’awiyah. To try and silence him,
Mu’awiyah sent him a large sum of money with a
slave whom he had promised freedom if Abudharr
accepted the bribe. Abidharr AS asked if the money
was from Mu’awiyah’s own wealth and if so how did
he acquire it? If it was from Baitul Maal
(Central Treasury), then did Mu’awiyah have
permission to bestow largesse to win over silence?
Did Mu’awiyah give everyone the same amount as
stipend? Despite the slaves pleas, Abidharr
refused to accept the ‘gift’ and that he had
enough to live on. Compare Abidharr to Harun
Al-Rashid who said that it mattered not where it
rained, the tax would still come to his coffers.
“Whoever considers himself rich by depending upon
ALLAH SWT, will find that others feel indebted to
him”. Such is the example of Ayatullah Al-Sistani
who owns nothing of the material world, yet wields
such authority and influence because of his
spirituality. Ayatullah Sistani has heeded the
hadith of The Prophet SAWW that whoever is content
with what ALLAH SWT provides, is the richest of
all.
Once a zahid who was being provided for by someone
else did not receive anything for three days. So,
he went to the provider and knocked at his door to
get a loaf of bread. As he left the provider’s
house, he saw a hungry dog that was silently
pleading to the zahid to feed him as his master
had not given him food for several days. The zahid
gave the bread to the dog. Herein there is a
lesson. The zahid finding nothing had come his way
for three days, left his house and went a knocking
on someone’s else’s’ door, the dog, despite being
hungry for several days did not leave his master’s
house to go beg at someone else’s door.
Imam Al-Sajjad AS says that the right of the needy
is that one who asks for financial help should be
helped by being given charity or by someone who is
able to fulfill his needs. Should that not be
possible then one should pray for the needy person
to find patience and spiritual satisfaction.
However, many a times when a person seeks help,
doubts arise as to whether he deserves the
assistance or not. Such doubts are the handiwork
of Satan who does not like anyone to give sadaqah
or to help a needy person.
